While listening to some good ‘ol Bon Jovi, “Livin’ On a Prayer,” I suddenly felt myself shift into a victorious warrior mode, like my brain had activated a secret chamber of confidence and solidarity that I’d only rarely felt in my 27-year-old life. For those of you who haven’t heard this song, GET ON YOUR COMPUTER OR PHONE OR SOMETHING AND LOOK IT UP! RIght now please. Pretty please.
I’ll wait . . .
Still waiting . . .
You good? You listened to the whole thing?
RIGHT?!? . . . BUT RIGHT?!?
It’s my new anthem for how I see the LGBTQIA++ community and our progress in the world. In light of Australia legalizing gay marriage, as well as several other parts of the world, and in light of the fact that there is an entire month dedicated to GAY PRIDE (some places even have major parades for this), as well as the fact that there is a store out there that actively supports gender neutrality and transitioning individuals (THANK YOU THE DISCRIMINANT), I have found some hope for humanity.
“Whoaaaaa We’re halfway there! Whoaaaa Livin’ on a prayer. Take my hand, and we’ll make it, I swear. Whoaaaa, Livin’ on a prayer.”
I mean, how cool is it that we are a community? I bet that we are easily 100,000+ LGBTQIA+ voices strong. To those who are out: Thank you. Your courage has helped several people to also be courageous to be who you are, and be so proudly, and loudly.
I bet there are easily 100,000+ more who are still scared to be vocally out, to find their voice, to know their gender. To those of you who fit this category: I’m so sorry. I’m sorry that you feel you cannot be authentically you. I’m sorry that it may not be safe for you to do so where you are right now, but know this: there ARE people and places that are safe for you to live authentically around. Things do get better. The world is making progress, albeit slowly, but progress. Find your people; find your support; live your truth, even if you can only do so in a journal or online.
I also know that there are easily 100,000+ people out there who are straight, like me, who love you all, support you, and find complete joy in others living authentically. Life is more beautiful with diversity. Thank you for beautifying my world.
